Traffic Engineering Parameters for VoMPLS

A Traffic Trunk is an MPLS traffic engineering concept that provides a mean for distributing the available network capacity between multiplexed streams. The traffic parameters describing a Traffic Trunk are basic to establish the network capacity that needs to be allocated in order to guarantee QoS. Traditional voice traffic characterization needs to be updated to include Silence Descriptor Insertion frames used by popular VoIP codecs like: G.729 or AMR. This paper develops the analytical expression for the upper and lower bounds of the capacity to be allocated for an MPLS traffic trunk loaded with a mix of heterogeneous SIDcapable voice sources. The comparison with VoIP quantifies the bandwidth saving benefits of VoMPLS.
